How do you think its racist? I think in a time when our country is at war and patriotism seems to be low, commercials like this are great and they should make more of them! Just because it didnt have an Asian person or a Mexican…that doesnt make it racist. Absolutely not!! Just good Americans doing American things. And if you have a problem with that…then stop being so F’ing sensitive! There is NOTHING wrong with being patriotic!
What’s non-patriotic about analyzing and criticizing a commercial?
Here’s where I stand:
1. There’s nothing wrong with the song. I kind of like it.
2. There’s nothing wrong with what each person in this commercial is doing. For example, when I was a kid I wanted to be a boy scout. I love trucks. There’s nothing wrong with babies. And I think forklifts are cool.
My question is:
Why is it okay to deliberately represent white male Americans and insinuate this is their country?
Sorry to say it, but this country also belongs to every other ethnicity’s living here.
Chevy has every right to produce targeted commercials. In order for commercials to be effective, they have to target specific buyers. That being said, they should be more tactful (ex: play a patriotic song that doesn’t elude to white people owning this country).
People like Carl that get bent out of shape when I criticize a commercial like this should step away from their keyboard and question their own analytical skills.
Stop resorting to calling people names and simply consider the issue.
You should look up racist in the dictionary, while you are ther look for the correct spelling for disgusted.
Okay, so I misspelled “disgusted” and know it’s fixed. Where’s your case? Where’s your examination of my reasoning?
It must have felt effortless constructing an anonymous attack on my spelling. You should look at the definition of racism yourself:
Racism – Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
I know what the definition is, but do you? Your interpretation of how to apply this definition to real life may be different than mine, but at least I’m not an offensive jackass. Some people are extremely lame nowadays, most people with a computer never learned to think critically, instead their impulses drive them to make rude comments.
My question was simply this: “Does anyone else think this is racist?” The question hasn’t changed. I’m open to anyone explaining the difference to me. Stop being a pompous conservative moralist who believes his or her argument is so right that an attack on me will suffice for an argument.

I was waiting for them to show a picture of the KKK, a burning cross, or a black guy hanging form a noose. I’m pretty sure that picture they show that has Rosa parks on the bus is actually showing the white guy behind her telling her to get off. Go Chevy!
[…] To Chevrolet: When you insist on running the same honky-intensive commercial over and over and over containing the phrase “this is our philosophy”, you might not want to put a picture under it depicting someone from a homophobic organization that illegally uses federal funds. […]
This commercial is not only obnoxious, but it most definetely comes off as racist, at least on some level. I’m a white guy and no bleeding heart liberal and don’t take offense at it, I’m just amused at the low Chevy is going to sell its trucks.
There is the obvious ‘this is our country’ sung over and over as conservative-looking good ol’ boys are shown.
Then you see ‘this is our purpose’ superimposed over a white father holding a blond-haired aryan looking child. I mean come on!!! You might as well say preservation of the white race is the ultimate goal of chevy drivers.
Then ‘this is our attitude’ ……. a nascar driver!!!! Talk about defining your target market… I am not saying all nascar fans are racists by any means, but I’d bet you’d find more racists that particular fan base than that of any other professional sport.
Finally you have ‘this is our backbone’ — blue collar workers on some kind of rig …. immediately followed by the image of a hunter and his dog looking for game… or is it a minuteman and his hound looking for illegals trying to get over the border and take our jobs? Your guess is as good as mine.
So even if this commercial isn’t blatantly racist, it is certainly playing to the subconcious racist tendencies of its target audience… ‘Nascar Dads’ .. to sell trucks in a market where truck and large SUV sales are declining noticeably.
Would this be the first time sleazy advertising has been used in an attempt to boost sales?
Political Correctness goes two ways… you ******* hicks.
I agree as well. My first impulse when I saw these “our country” ads playing over and over and over during football was WOW! All white men flashing on the screen with ‘this is our country’ being said over and over. I’m a young white woman and it hit me like a bolt. Its really the combination of the song and images that really hit me wrong - one without the other wouldn’t be as bad. If the song was about country fathers and sons or if they showed different people… As is, I was grossed out but not at all surprised.
I couldn’t believe these commercials when I first saw them. The combination of the images, the background music, and the on-screen text says the following:
We don’t care how we got it, this country belongs to white heterosexual males now. The best white heterosexual males drive Chevy Trucks on their way to their Klan meetings.
The rest of you don’t belong here.
suggest a new campaign then. what would you prefer: this is a *** country. or this is Osama’s country. What?
what i dont understand is why everyone is so upset…if your lookin at it that way then yeah i can see how you think its racist but why not look at it the way, in my opinion, chevy was seein it….it depicts the average male that they sell to…i dont know about where your from but around here for some reason the only people that drive trucks are farmers and teenagers…..but to answer your question no i do not see it as racist i see it as a company advertising to their largest customer population
They do a very similar version in Canada. They’re not crazy about it there either: http://fantasywriterguy.blogspot.com/2007/01/television-and-window.html#links
Damn!! I swear you guys (and girls) really need to get a life! Have you all become such spineless creatures that you have to LOOK for the racism in every aspect of life? So none of you see any problems with there being a BET channel or having a Miss Black America pageant (aren’t we ALL americans?) or having a strictly black college.
The commercail shows white men (yes) but certainly not in suits and ties, doing ordinary menial labor. I’m sure that if it had shown a couple of photos of black men working that oil rig, you’d have all been screaming about THAT!
I certainly believe in equality of rights but when my rights (and yes I’m a college educated white male) are being tossed aside completely for the betterment of some other race, it’s making me a sick. Looking at the majority of today’s black youth and their majority of useless baby-producing parents and my child will be at the top of the food chain in a few years unless our country goes to hell under such liberal idealists such as yourselves. I constantly tell him that he has no reason to apologize for being white. We are a middle class working family, but I work for the betterment of myself, my child, and my condition. I certainly don’t depend on handouts from other people’s tax dollars (of which a GREAT amount of mine is being doled out); monies that should be going to SS or to my personal retirement account. Come on….give me your “Southern redneck” comments…’cause ya’ll know what….I certainly am, and am more proud of that fact every day!
So why don’t you round up all your bleeding heart white buddies, pack all your poor downtrodden black bretheren who want to go, grab a large boat, and get the hell out of America. I’d contribute to THAT fund!!!
it is our country so get over it.
I don’t believe it is a racist commercial. it just shows people doing thing I don’t see color in it at all. the problem is, is that you are looking for color. look at it as a commercial and that’s it!
I don’t know if I’ve already said this but, I think it’s a form of extreme target marketing. I think if that’s what they were going for, they did a really good job of it.
But… I don’t think playing that commercial in a diverse city like Los Angeles is a great way of showing Angelenos that this is their country.
This excluded the asians, african-americans, mexicans, and even women.
Doesn’t this country also belong to them?
Craig -
I guess we’re playing the respond to a specific argument with a blanket statement about race in general as a means of telling a few ‘bloggers’ (Im not a blogger or part of any ‘internet community) how you feel.
Yeah! Let ‘em have it sparky!!!. Now its my turn to blow off some steam because I’m a balding hick selling HVAC parts for a mediocre company, maybe owned by a black guy??!?!, who “certainly don’t depend on handouts from other people’s tax dollars (of which a GREAT amount of mine is being doled out)” You know what jackass? stop crying, suck it up up, if you don’t like the AMERICAN tax system, get the hell out.
O yeah, I guarantee either your daughter, wife, son, or all 3 are probably engaging in sexual relationships with a black guy (and thats none of them will sleep with you any more - he’s just that good)
O boo hoo!!! BET and Miss Black America - its called freedom of speech brother - don’t like it??? Too bad, check the constitution (first amendment) - you do believe in the constitution, don’t you craig? Or are you a dirty labor union commy?
I fully support chevy’s right to run these commercials, I’m just exerting my right to comment on them in a manner of my choosing, and in doing so hope one less chevy gets sold because they’re pandering, racist ******** who hasn’t made a quality automobile in 20 years and will probably get bought out by a Japanese company at some point in the near future; they would probably benefit from the quality management. (Thats called capitalism, wanna hate on it too pinko???)
By 2040, there will be more hispanics than gringos in America. You ready for that Craig? O my mistake, you’ll be dead.
Love it or leave it you **********.
Maybe it’s time to start killin’ you worthless *****
Well….I wouldn’t say it’s racist but it is appealing to caucasians only. I love how they did the baseball one on Cal Ripken, congratulating him on making the hall of fame. Uh, didn’t Tony Gywnn also make the hall of fame?
If that’s not blatant enough then I don’t know what is.
Yet, as mad as the commercials make me, it brings me great pleasure in knowing that GMC is cutting over 10,000 jobs while auto makers like toyota are selling cars like crazy. Judging by their marketing strategy, they’re just a tad more successful.
Thank god I live in a country where not only can a company make any commercial they would like, but we can freely and openly discuss it with no worries of being put on a government list. I will be the only one here who will admit this but, Yes I probably am a racist, there i said it. Now I dont go out and look for other races to mess with, but I dont mingle with other races in my personal life. I go to nascar races, surprised? I didnt think so, and what do I see at the races? White folks like me, so if Chevy wants to target people and use a nascar star and other white folks in the commercials I can relate to that commercial. and btw chevy also has a commercial with dale jr. and the rap star ti, is anyone complaining about that? also I am not a member of the kkk but dosent the kkk have as much right to exist as the black panthers?? so why do they get a mention in one of the other replys ? I really think some of you folks should mellow out and get a hobby, this is not a real issue. ( and to you spelling Nazi’s out there, I know, and i dont care.)
When I first saw it, I senced the racism. To ignorant people like Craig, you need to leave America, minorities aren’t gonna just pack up their bags. They’ve been through more **** in this country than you can even begin to fathom. Why isn’t this country theirs? This country was built on the back of free labor. The shear lack of knowledge causes racism; however it doesn’t surprise me I have ceased to be shocked by it. This is white America manifesting itself. One more thing, these colleges, and pageants, and television networks you speak of are designed to create agency because none is given.
You aren’t very bright.
So, becuase everyone in the commercial is white, its racist?
So typical…….quit whining.
I’ve seen this commercial many times, and not once did I think it was racist. Not every aspect of it appeals to me (ie. the nascar bit), but here’s what works for me: the guys working their tails off on the wood lease (if you don’t think the guy laying back on the logs works hard for his money, you have so much to learn), rig and the farm - honest pay for honest work; and the guy holding his child. I don’t have kids yet, but should my wife and I be lucky enough someday, guaranteed we’re going to do the best we can for our children.
To the guy saying Canadians don’t like the commercial either - speak for yourself. I’m Canadian, and had no problem with it.
As to why it would be OK for Chevy to single out white men, and then say the US is their country? Freedom of speech, as someone pointed out. Also, at what point in the Chevy commercial did it say the US did NOT belong to anyone else as well? So, Chevy left the legal bit out saying “The United States also belongs to people of every gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation as well”, thinking that most people would have the common sense to understand this.
That’s a big factor in what I think is going wrong with our society (our society in general, US, Canada, everywhere else)…people are too worried about offending someone. And the ones being offended are most often the ones looking for things to be offended by. And when they can’t find something offensive, they stretch and skew the meaning of a commercial, or article or speech until they find some solid ground for their soapbox . Case in point: The bird hunter and his dog. Seriously, watch the video, that’s all they are.
It’s funny how people here say it’s appealing to farmers, when you think about most of the farmers the construction workers are also Hispanic and black. White people are not the only ones that buy truck so do many other races just by saying it this is our country it’s like saying it belongs to Caucasian man. Because of commercials like this the car companies spark questions in immigration and makes the ignorant person start saying it’s only met for the white man.
I think the U.S.A. is going back to it’s old roots because of people complaining all the time about race and black people trying the best they can to take advantage of white people.
Why don’t they just work to better themselves? Instead of not working for a better future?
If you think this statement is racist…then I can’t help you understand reality. Sorry!
It says to me that on the whole blacks don’t buy large pickup trucks, and go figure, they really don’t!!
It implies that our country was built and protected by hard working americans, and if there aren’t too many of those around who are black, well then if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck….
great commercial.
Uhhh… that white people enslaved Africans brought them to America and allowed rich white people to live cozy lives on their backs until the 1850s. Then even when blacks were “free” you kept them from voting, going to good schools, sitting where they wanted on the bus, etc. until 1960’s.
